Open source design isn't a new concept to Whirlwind. We've been doing it for over 30 years. This collaborative, open approach to design ideas has helped us create some of the most innovative wheelchairs brought to market - and some of the designs that didn't quite make it that far!

Because we have not yet posted anything in this space due to being short-staffed, there has been some confusion about exactly what we mean by Open Source. This space is meant to be used for specific, concrete collaborative projects that will be in the public domain. We do not intend for all of our SolidWorks drawings and designs that are not placed up here, including the RoughRider^tm model, to be available to everyone without our oversight and permission. All of our drawing sets are protected by a Creative Commons license. If you are interested in producing the Whirlwind RoughRider^tm please contact us at info@whirlwindwheelchair.org for details. Meanwhile, one of these days we'll define a specific design challenge that the whole world can solve together. Stay tuned.
