We would love your help! Providing quality mobility for wheelchair riders in the developing world is a big job. There is plenty of room to participate. In these tough economic times, our biggest needs are donations to cover design, production, and quality control costs. Please check the ‘donate’ link below to see what your donation can accomplish. Volunteer opportunities available now. We have plans for marketing, IT, fundraising, and web design projects. And, we always need help in raising awareness for the opportunity we have to make a big difference in people’s lives with traditional fundraisers and new social media like Facebook. Volunteers have traveled with us to help distribute chairs. And, they have made a huge contribution through less glamorous office support services. To get started, please fill out our brief volunteer form and we’ll get back to you right away. Each semester, Whirlwind gives a hands-on wheelchair design and construction class at San Francisco State University to students and interested members of the community. The class meets Tuesday evenings from 5 pm to 10 pm. At 6:30 pm, students get into wheelchairs and ride to the student union for a 30 to 45 minute dinner break and push back again to class to better understand wheelchair ergonomics. Students not only learn to build a wheelchair but also hear from a variety of speakers on related topics such as wheelchair cushions, special seating for children, independent living and advocacy. Occasionally, students have an opportunity to travel with Whirlwind staff to an international project site.
