WheelchairBuilding Class
Each semester, Whirlwind
gives a hands-on wheelchair design and construction class at San Francisco
State University to students and interested members of the community.
The class meets Tuesday evenings from 5 pm to 10 pm. At 6:30 pm, students
get into wheelchairs and ride to the student union for a 30 to 45 minute
dinner break and push back again to class to better understand wheelchair
ergonomics. Students not only learn to build a wheelchair but also hear
from a variety of speakers on related topics such as wheelchair cushions,
special seating for children, independent living and advocacy. Occasionally,
students have an opportunity to travel with Whirlwind staff to an international
project site.
